Design Journey
How I became a product designer
The timeline is quite long, so if you’d like to skip to get to the contact me page, click here!
July 2012 -
Where it all began
My graphic design journey began in 2012 when I first opened GIMP and self-taught through YouTube videos and made my first digital image.
January 2013 -
Graphics for friends
I started to have an interest in graphic design, but didn't know what it was. I worked on multiple fun projects and made decent design graphics for friends and enjoyed the process throughout the way.
April 2015 -
Social media management & digital illustrations
I began drawing on my phone for fun and ran a Tumblr account with over 16,000 followers. One of my biggest art pieces received over 750,000 shares across the platform and it was the first ever serious step towards digital graphics.
November 2016 -
Video production
I realized that working with graphics is fun, but wanted to touch my hand on video production. I felt that my graphical skills could be in handy with what I could envision with video creations. During this time, I was familiar with iMovie. So I made several YouTube videos relating to class projects and had a successful outcome, even one of my teachers told me to keep this skill when I go to college!
January 2017 -
Lead designer for high school yearbook class
I became the lead designer for our yearbook class and managed over 600+ contents and materials so that the entire class can be on track of how to design the book. I oversee mostly the entire design book and keep close touch with my teacher to make sure things are on the right track. I also designed the 2017 yearbook cover.
July 2017 -
More graphics & entering college
I made more graphics for friends, enhancing my skill set even more and was surely confident with my digital design ability. I entered the University of Iowa for Graphic Design.
December 2017 -
Fraternity involvement
I became the lead designer for my fraternity and managed over 50 promotional contents, posters, images, and marketing materials to ensure that everything stays in order. I designed roughly 40+ high quality promo images to promote the fraternity and build external relationships across the nation.
July 2018 -
Firsthand experience with bad UX
In roughly the summer of 2018, I worked with a company that holds the biggest ice cream production in the nation. The company uses an app called UKG Kronos to help employees connect, edit, and manage their accounts. However, I realized that the app was not up to date with most of its navigation and systematic design. I didn’t know that I was dealing with bad UX, and kept this in the back of my hand as it wasn’t important to me at the time.
June 2019 -
Massive leap in design knowledge
During this year, I had learned a lot about graphic design as well as the terminology, principles and concepts of the design process. I learned After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, and inDesign. On top of this, I learned Cinema4D and AutoDesk just to see what it’s like as it was part of my class projects. Fairly enough, I enjoyed the learning experience.
January 2020 -
More fine arts experience
During 2020, I took up some more classes to sharpen my fine arts skills, a lot of these classes range from ceramic, printmaking, architecture and painting. I’ve learned a lot in terms of discussion, criticisms, and overall teamwork and communication. I also realized that I am a learner throughout this journey and is always seeking feedback all the time.
April 2021 -
The full transition into UX Design
I was introduced to UX design when I talked with one of my professors at the university, and this is where the tech industry sparks my interests. I wanted to fully finish my degree in graphic design, and use the skillset and transfer them into user experience design.
May 2021 -
Graduation
I graduated from the University of Iowa with an honor in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I have also worked hard to earn my spot on the Dean’s list 3 times in a row prior to graduation. Here is a link to my student profile!
August 2022 -
The present
